Writing vision statements
Vision Statement
Before you formulate your SMART goals it is important to have a framework or "big picture" to place them into. We recommend starting with a broader vision statement or written snapshot of what you want life to look like when you have achieved your long term goal. You can use our worksheet for a primer for ideas but don't limit your creativity and vision to the form. Your vision should be the ideal outcome that you want. This is the place to stretch your imagination and think of the best possible outcome for the time period you are projecting.
Here's an example:
Jet Lake 2020
In 2020 I'll be living in my hometown of Helena Montana with my wife, our newborn child, Joey, who is three months old, and our other two children my chocolate labs. Mocha is five and Porter is just a puppy at six months old. Our home is a modest ranch style home in the outskirts of town with five acres of treed land on hillside with a view of the valley. In our oversized two car garage is my brand new hybrid drive Chevy truck that I drive to work every day. My wife's three year old plug-in hybrid Toyota sedan sits next to it and by looking at it you would thing it is brand new. Both my wife and I are working and have managed to get the Toyota paid off early so we put the truck on only a four year loan to save some money. Each day I drive into town and drop Joey at his day care and then across town to the engineering firm that I work for. I am a civil engineer. I love the culture of where I work, everyone pitches in and helps when it gets busy but also knows how to cut lose and have some fun when it's not. It's a real casual place where you can wear jeans every day and shorts are okay in the summer. On Sunday we will go to church as usual. Then we will get together with some other couples from the office to plan a vacation on Lake Mead. We have four couples going on the trip. We'll probably take our boat. I can't wait to get out of the cold for awhile and head south. I still love the snow and skiing but wakeboarding in the sunshine sure has its appeal mid-winter.
